What is a Poly Relationship?

Polyamory, a type of relationship where three or more individuals are simultaneously involved and aware of each others presence allows for the possibility of having multiple sexual and romantic relationships at the same time.

This concept stems from polygamy or non monogamy.

However polyamory is not widely accepted in Western societies due to the traditional notion of monogamy, which emphasizes exclusive partnerships with no involvement beyond the relationship.

Different forms of polyamorous relationships exist, depending on the agreed upon rules among the parties involved.

These include polygamy, where a person marries multiple individuals simultaneously and all parties are aware thereof.

Polyfidelity involves diverse romantic and sexual connections limited to within a specific subset.

In group relationships, everyone is considered part of one “family.”

Lastly, there is the mono-poli relationship where one partner practices monogamy but accepts their partners’ external relationships.

Polyamory offers numerous benefits. But perhaps one of its most significant advantages is that it rejects notions of ownership. In a polyamorous dynamic nobody possesses anyone and vice versa.

This defies common human nature and allows for guilt free engagement with others. To prevent misunderstandings and future accusations honesty about desires should be emphasized from the beginning.

Additionally research suggests that individuals in polyamorous relationships tend to experience greater happiness compared to those in monogamous arrangements.

Individuals who cheat on their monogamous partners may attribute their dissatisfaction solely to their partner; however.

Those in polyamorous relationships may attribute any unhappiness they feel to their first partner instead.

Contrary to commonly held beliefs, psychologist Melissa Mitchell from the University of Georgia in the United States conducted a study that revealed the pursuit of a second partner is unrelated to dissatisfaction with the first couples’ relationship. In fact Mitchells research found that intimacy and satisfaction with the initial partner actually increased over time.
