What is a Master/Slave Contract?

In this post, we go over what is a Master/Slave (M/s) contract.

What is a Master/Slave Contract?

In BDSM, a Master/slave relationship is when one person, a slave, gives another person, the Master, ultimate authority over many aspects of their life and well-being.

This type of relationship goes beyond typical submission. Instead, it is an act of surrender.

Participants can be of any gender and of any sexual orientation.

If the owner of the slave identifies as male, they are referred to as Master.

If the owner of the slave identifies as female, they are referred to as Mistress.

The Master/slave relationship can only be established on a consensual basis, without the legal force of historical or modern non-consensual slavery, which is prohibited by most countries’ laws.

In other words, the contract a Master and slave share is not legally binding. It is simply a formality in the BDSM community.

On a more casual level, some participants can roleplay as a “Master” and “slave” for kinky fun. Whereas others enter the relationship with the intention of committing to a long-term, submissive lifestyle, as mentioned earlier.

Symbols and rituals related to the Master/slave contract and other power exchange dynamics

A collar can symbolize an M/s or D/s relationship between two or more people.

Other symbolics rituals include:

  • Wearing different collars for different occasions
  • Being registered in a “slave register”
  • Bestow nicknames or honorifics
  • Public ceremonies

Some people fill out a slave contract, which explicitly defines the relationship. In addition to sexual agreements, these contracts can address internal arrangements (such as housekeeping and family duties) and interpersonal relationship issues (such as deference, language, and so on).

Typically, the Master is given sole authority over the slave’s body and behavior, including underwear and other clothing, out-of-agreement social relations, and so on.

While such contracts are not enforceable in the same ways that legal contracts are, they can be useful for defining in writing the boundaries of the agreement between the signatories and documenting the consensually of the relationships they establish.
