Are corsets bad for your organs?

A famous saying that haunts us women says, “To look beautiful, you must suffer.” But without exaggerating and, most importantly, without endangering your health. This is the case of the “aesthetic” corset we discussed due to the Waist Training phenomenon; a rigid constricting corset brought back into vogue recently by the Kardashian sisters. This type of corset, about 30 centimeters tall and aimed at shaping the waist, constricts the female body from under the breast to the waist. It has been confirmed that its continuous use can harm posture and abdominal and back muscles.

What can be the most damaging effects of constantly wearing a constricting brace?

«The first disadvantage is the contraction and displacement of the hypochondriacal organs, namely the spleen and liver. Second, there may be less lung expansion, or the ability to breathe deeply, which affects the diaphragm. As a result, people who wear the brace always tend to breathe more shallowly. A brace’s effects are dependent on visceral obesity in addition to contracting the movable internal organs. If a person is extremely thin, the effects will be minimal; however, if he is overweight, his fat will be pushed and compressed internally, potentially causing constriction of the organs to which he is attached. I am vehemently opposed to using this constraint, which has already been demonstrated to be harmful in its time ».

The corset was a socially imposed standard for women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but the extent of the negative effects was still unknown at the time. The hourglass shape that women’s bodies assumed resulted from the bustier was an essential but harmful beauty canon. By significantly shrinking the rib cage, women who wore it risked movement and organ damage, breaking ribs, breathing difficulties that caused fainting, and digestive problems. We women have been free of this standard of beauty for some time. Still, fashions come and go, and it is important to evaluate the use of excessively constricting accessories rationally. The situation is different for skinny jeans, push-up leggings, or very tight sheath dresses, which are other fashion items (in this case on the agenda for most women) that have no specific contraindications. “If you consider tight sheath dresses on the legs, for example, there may even be benefits for the veins, just as elastic stockings are used as a prophylaxis for thrombosis.” However, it depends on the compression on the testicles, which if excessive is not good, while the vascular structure is not negatively influenced in this case.”
