Vibrators, dildos, and anal toys all come into close touch with biological fluids, so knowing how to clean them correctly is essential. Cleaning your sex toys does not have to be difficult, but the repercussions of not doing so may be disastrous.
Using filthy sex toys can bring germs or other pathogens into the vulvar-vaginal environment, causing bacterial vaginosis or a urinary tract infection. It’s especially crucial to clean toys that are shared by several people.
Almost any sex toy may be washed on the surface with liquid soap and water, then air-dried. However, there will be times when it is necessary to clean your toys more thoroughly.
How to Keep Sex Toys Clean
For surface cleaning
- Water
- Soap: It’s best to use liquid hand soap or castile soap. It’s acceptable to use antibacterial soap, but it’s not required. Dish soaps and other harsh soaps should be avoided.
- Paper towels: Use these to air-dry toys after cleaning.
For deep cleaning
- Pot for boiling water: You may disinfect a variety of toys by first surface-cleaning them and then immersing them for a few minutes in hot water.
- Bleach and spray bottle: Boiling and bleaching will kill most pathogens on your toys, but you have to know that not all pathogens die.
- Dishwasher: Make sure your dishwasher has the necessary disinfection settings. Otherwise, boiling or bleaching your toys is a better option.
- Paper towels or clean washcloths: To air-dry toys after washing, use paper towels or clean washcloths.
Optional
- Sex-toy wipes or cleaning sprays: Most of the time, ordinary soap and water will be enough.
How long will this take to clean?
Depending on the approach you employ, cleaning timeframes will vary. Expect to spend one to three minutes each toy surface-cleaning, not counting air-drying time. Expect to spend extra three minutes disinfecting a toy if you want to boil it. It takes around 10 minutes to sterilize toys by bleaching them. Plan for a full-rinse cycle if you decide to use a dishwasher (timing may vary).
Cleaning Methods
It is always a good idea to consult your toy’s handbook for the best cleaning method. These are the best three levels of cleaning accordingly:
-Cleaning removes a lot of material from the surface of the toy.
-Disinfecting, often known as sanitizing, can destroy germs and pathogens in order to make anything the toy sanitary.
-Sterilizing eliminates all bacteria, viruses, and fungus from the toy.
Your vibrator, ballgag, or butt plug, at the absolute least, should be clean. It should be free of lubricant and body fluids. A basic soap and water wash will usually be enough if you’re the only one who uses it, or if you and a fluid-bonded partner are the only ones. Unless you’re performing an invasive medical role, sterilization is excessive. What we normally aim for is disinfecting or sanitizing our toys.
