Safe, Sane, and Consensual or SSC
The original in terms of keeping your kinkiness on the right track is SSC, which stands for safe, sane, and consensual. For those of us who follow SSC, three questions come to mind:
- Is it safe for us to do?
- Is it reasonable to do so? (ex. is everyone of sound mind to consent)
- Do we agree with it?
To make SSC work, both partners must agree on what is safe and reasonable. When you and your partner are on the same page, feel the same way about things, and have a similar kink worldview, this works beautifully. It can lead to confusion if you don’t (which is where good communication comes in).
Risk-Aware Consensual Kink or RACK
RACK, or Risk-Aware Consensual Kink, was developed in response to complaints that SSC was too vague and confusing. Whose definition of “safe” or “sane” are we discussing? What if I believe something is insane, but you believe it is perfectly reasonable? Who is the victor in this debate?
RACK defines things more precisely.
Risk-aware: Simply stated, you are “aware of the risk,” but I believe it could go further. You should be able to identify these dangers and know how to avoid them.
Consensual: Everyone is in agreement with what you’re about to do or what you’re doing right now.
Kink: Your choice of thrill in the given activity, power exchange, scene, or moment.
Use this as a checklist if you’re new to RACK but enjoy it. Are you able to identify the dangers? Are you both able to give each other your consent? Do you have a clear understanding of the upcoming event or activity?
