Are corsets good for posture?

It seems that poor posture is the defining characteristic of the modern man. Suppose you’ve seen a basic chart of human evolution, the kind that begins with an ape walking on all fours and ends with a modern-day hominid standing upright. In that case, you might think that we’re starting to go backwards, considering how many people have poor posture and bend over.

You can blame it on computer culture, which causes us to hunch over a keyboard all day, or you can blame it on smart phones and tablets, which cause us to bend our necks to look at them whenever a notification pops up. Either way, it’s not good for our posture (at approximately 2-second intervals). You could point the finger at slacker and more casual clothing, more laid-back attitudes, or even just plain old laziness.

Whatever the reasons, modern humans do not appear to have an inclination to keep an erect posture, and the result, in addition to being weak, could be an increase in back pain. When we slouch, we easily add pressure to our spines, which can cause them to become misaligned and put us in pain. Our spines were developed for an upright posture.

You could try walking around with a book on your head or practicing mindfulness to improve your posture. However, there is a method that is much simpler and will result in a more upright appearance. Do corsets improve one’s posture? They are capable of doing so. If you are interested in using this supportive garment to make you stand a little taller, here is some information you should be aware of.

Straighten Your Back

To bend at the waist, you will have to tighten the corset. To achieve a firm, unyielding structure, steel boning is sewn into the garment’s channels and spaced evenly to create a corset that is both rigid and effective at slimming the waist.

For the most part, you can bend at the hips, but the area your corset covers will not bend, even in a tiny waspie almost entirely confined to within a few inches of your waist. A better posture can only be achieved by wearing more clothing that provides adequate coverage.

An easy-to-use back brace comes to mind. To help with posture and back pain, this medical device has a small waistband but a larger back portion, which can help treat more serious conditions like herniated discs by helping align your spine.

Corsets follow the same rule. A waspie or an overbust corset will work just as well for slimming your waist if that’s all you care about. Compressing your spine more will produce better results if you want to improve your posture. You can’t hunch over when you’re standing or sitting in the right corset.

A Strict Regime

Bad habits are difficult to break, so chances are you’ll resume slouching as soon as your corset comes off. So, how do corsets help with posture in the long run? You must wear them regularly.

Anyone interested in waist training will discover that they must not only wear a corset daily to engineer incremental improvements in the size of their waist over time, but they must also wear this compression garment for the majority of the day. You’ll start slowly, with only a couple of hours of wear per day, but many serious waist trainers wear their corsets to bed, taking them off only for a couple of hours a day to bathe and groom.

Wearing a corset throughout the day is ideal for long-term posture improvements. You’ll notice that you stand more erect even without your corset over time, but it won’t happen overnight. Stick to a regular wear regimen, however, and you will notice long-term improvements in your posture and, very likely, lower back pain.
