A Slippery Guide to Lube (aka Motion Lotion)

Lube, or lubrication, is a fluid that makes sex and/or masturbation easier by softening skin, reducing genital/orifice irritation, making penetration easier, changing the taste of oral, etc.

What is the best lube for you?

Water-based lube is easy to find, affordable, safe for condoms and toys, easy to clean, don’t stain, very kink-friendly (ie electro play, fisting, etc). But they don’t last very long, especially if you’re having shower sex, and it become sticky and uncomfy. You can add more lube or spit to get the lube slippery again.

Silicon lube is condom safe and stays slippery longer, lasts longer than water-based lube, glass and metal-friendly. But it will wear out silicon toys, not good for electro toys, can be expensive and it can stain and be difficult to clean up.

Oil-based lube has a nice massage quality, easy to find, affordable. But they are not condom-friendly, traps bacteria, and stains easily. An exception can be coconut oil.

Hybrid lubes are a combination of silicon and water-based lubes. This makes them condom and toy-friendly while retaining the slippery quality for longer. However, it can be sticky.

Arousal lubes are typically water-based and have chemicals that stimulate a warm or cool sensation.

Flavored lubes are to make for a tastier experience.

Desensitizing lubes are generally for making a partner last longer or increase pain tolerance, but can also be used as part of a punishment.

Spit lube is saliva your using at a moment’s notice.

Safety Tips for Lube

  • Add some lube on your penis before putting on a condom
  • Don’t use oil-based lubes for penetration or on condoms
  • Aloe vera breaks down silicone
  • Petrochemicals and parabens ingredients simulate estrogen in the body

In fact, avoid all of the following:

  • acetate
  • benzocaine
  • citric acid
  • glycerin
  • petroleum oils
  • nonocynol

Always read the ingredients and test your lube on your skin before adding a partner into the mix.
