A Quick Guide on Caning

This post, A Quick Guide on Caning, was written by my friend Asani.

What is caning?

Caning is a technique where the dominant strikes the submissive partner with a long flexible cane. This is usually done on the buttocks.

Canes Types and Uses

Canes can vary by material and size. For example, a thin cane will provide a sharper sting, while a thick cane will produce a thud or softer blow.

Nowadays, you will find canes made of rattan, nylon, fiberglass, stainless steel, Lexan, bamboo, and many others.

Bamboo canes are usually for advanced BDSM players because it has the risk of them breaking or cracking.

Natural & Synthetic Canes

Canes usually fall into two categories- natural or synthetic.

Natural canes are usually made from wood, while synthetic ones are made of different materials like metal, nylon, Delrin, and more.

The purist BDSM players stick to the natural canes since corporal punishment was done in the early days with natural wood.

Synthetic canes provide versatility. When you want to experience a broader array of sensations or want to explore options, then synthetic canes are good. They are tougher and easier to care for than wood.

Stingy & Thud Canes

Two types of pain can be experienced by caning. One is a stingy or sharp pain and usually fades very quickly. Thud pain is heavier, goes deeper, and can leave long-lasting bruises can be induced.

Depending on the preferences, thicker canes provide thud pains while thin canes provide sharper pains.

Electro & Metal Canes

With the rise of the sex toy industry, new kinds of canes have come into the market.

Metal canes like stainless steel, aluminum, gold, and silver have become popular.

Electro canes are made from materials that can conduct electricity. A small voltage is applied to deliver a light sting or vibration to the bottom.

How to Care for Your Cane

Natural canes need more care than synthetic canes due to many factors. So let’s have a look at things that can help you maintain your cane:

  1. Synthetic canes are non-porous. So antibacterial wipes and bleach can be used here for a thorough cleaning. Synthetic canes that tolerate a high temperature can be dipped in boiling water to deep clean them.
  2. Natural canes can’t be thoroughly cleaned like synthetic canes. Since they are porous, they need to be cleaned in a specific way.

How to Store Your Cane

Instrument cases can be bought to store your cane. However, since natural canes are prone to damage, they need extra care. Synthetic canes can be stored anywhere.

Natural canes are moist. Keep that in mind. They might feel dry to touch, but there is moisture in the fibers. So you need to consider that.

  • Don’t store them by wrapping them in plastic.
  • Deep them in the fridge.
  • Don’t use Tupperware containers.

Also, some natural canes like rattan canes will bend.

So what do you do then?

The best solution is to hang your cane.

Many of the canes have a small opening called an eyelet, typically in the grip. This will help you hang the cane on a hook. That way, gravity will keep the cane straight and prevent it from bending.

Tips on How to Maintain Your Cane:

  • When you clean your natural canes, they lose their moisture. This will make it brittle and more likely to snap the next time you use it. So, soaking the cane is necessary from time to time. I soak my natural cane after every six months. And keep in mind that you don’t need to soak the whole cane in water. Just submerge the tip in water. This will allow the capillaries to absorb the water it needs.
  • Use linseed oil for moisturizing after the stick has been soaked in water.
  • Steam natural canes for moisture.

How to Use Canes

Grab hold of the cane on the thicker end.

The major areas where you can cane your partner are the buttocks and thighs. These areas are good since the muscle and fat absorb physical impact.

You can also use a cane on feet, hands, and inner thighs if you are very careful and experienced.

You can also strike genitalia, but you have to be in total control of the impact.
