How To Use Wax Play Candles in BDSM (& How Hot They Can Burn)

Mastering wax play entails navigating the nuances of candle wax temperatures, materials, and methods to create a personalized and safe sensory experience.

Not all wax burns at the same temperature. The ideal range for candle wax to burn is between 110F and 130F.

People who have higher tolerance for hotter wax temperatures will tend to lean towards being masochistic or pain bottoms. You will notice that they prefer playing in the 130F to 145F range (assuming they are into temperature play).

Despite your pain tolerance, your skin will get burned after a certain temperature. Keep that in mind.

The factors affecting wax burning temperatures are:

  • Scented/Unscented
  • Candle Type
  • Distance dropped

Generally, the most recommended candles will be made with paraffin or soy. There is not much difference in terms of melting points for candles made predominantly with these materials.

The best way to test how hot the wax burns is by testing it on yourself. Try dropping melted candle wax on your arm from both two feet above and then some distance that is closer to get a feel how your batch works.

If you are planning to get regular candles from your local grocery store, then there’s a very high chance it will be made of beeswax, which we’ve mentioned before, isn’t safe to play with.

There are also different candle shapes to consider:

  • Standard Pillar Candles will melt the center of the candle’s top to allow pooling for ease of pouring.
  • Taper Candles are used for cases such as bondage, where the long candle is held directly over the bottom where the wax is meant to land.
  • Votive Candles are similar to pillar candles except shorter.

Ways To Use Wax Play Candles

To prep the body, you want to apply lotion so that the wax is easier to remove from the skin.

Based on the type of candle you select from above, you can take different approaches to how you do wax play with your partner(s).

For example, you can use taper candles for a more consistent melt on your partner. Or you can light two pillar candles and take turns spilling one candle while the other pools wax.

Other forms of play include using a brush or ladle to scoop up melted wax from a crockpot full of melted wax.

Depending on how hot the wax runs on your partner, you will want to keep water, damp rags, and maybe cooling pads nearby to help with the sensation play and safety.

It’s not uncommon that the top will drop a candle. So you want to consider the type of flooring you are dealing with in the scene. Tiles are safer than carpeting since it’s a reduced fire hazard.

Do not perform wax play on the face, on piercings, or your genitalia. Only the well-experienced should consider playing with wax on the genitals.

Wax play can sometimes be used as a type of chastity play, where the wax seals away the genitalia until the Top chooses it to be removed.
