Here is a brief history of BDSM munches.
Munches began in the early 1990s, well before the widespread adoption of the internet. Meeting members of the BDSM scene was a little more difficult at the time, due to the prevalent anti-BDSM sentiment and the resulting lack of places to meet others with similar interests. While there were organizations like the Society of Janus and the Backdrop Club, there were few informal ways to meet people in the scene. A common meeting ground on the internet was the USENET group alt.sex.bondage, as well as a San Francisco-area email list known as BABES at the time (Bay Area Bondage Enthusiasts Society).
STella(tm), a member of alt.sex. bondage and BABES, organized a social gathering at Flames, a coffeehouse in Santa Clara, California. It was a small gathering in the corner of a family-friendly coffee shop.
Following that, a loose rotation of meeting sponsors and locations was established, with varying degrees of success. STella(tm) suggested that a standard time and location be chosen, and Kirk’s Steakburgers at 361 S California Avenue in Palo Alto was chosen because it had both great hamburgers and a large patio where attendees could meet in relative privacy. The “burger munch” was the term for this. (Kirk’s original location was demolished, but a few other locations remain.)
With discreet play, the Kirk’s burger munch drew a large and often boisterous crowd. The atmosphere became less discreet as time passed, and people began bringing in outside food. The management eventually demanded that the group stop meeting there.
Many of the original attendees discovered a new social gathering just down the street, though STella requested that they not call it “burger munch.” The name was changed to “munch,” and the gathering became more subdued. Miss Vicki, the organizer of the first spin-off munch, still runs a munch in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The term ‘Burger Munch’ was coined not only for the Palo Alto munch, but also for meetings held at Mr. Bartley’s Burger Cottage in Harvard Square in 1994 and possibly earlier. According to someone who was very active in the scene at the time and still is today, the first munches in the United States were called “burger munches” and were located in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston.
