What are the types of ethical non-monogamy?
If you’ve been in monogamous relationships but felt like they didn’t “fit” your personality, maybe you should reconsider how you live your love life.
While there are many ways to have an open relationship, the majority of non-monogamy practices are done in the following ways:
- swinger
A swinger relationship is one with a main partner, similar to a monogamous relationship. Members of this relationship, however, swap partners with others.
Swinger relationships differ from the other seven types of non-monogamy in that relationship members can only have sex with someone new if the main partner is present.
- liberal couple
A liberal relationship is one where there aren’t really any established rules to the relationship when it comes to sleeping with other people. However, they still address emotional issues they come across.
Those involves in these relationships are considered liberal due to their high sexual desire and fantasies.
This type of relationship can involve the couple living in various ways. Some people who engage in liberal relationships, for example, engage in group sex or partner swapping. Others, on the other hand, are only open to chance encounters if they occur unexpectedly.
- No sexual exclusivity or polysex
Some people prefer to have sex with multiple partners. Instead of deceiving others, they prefer to do so consensually, communicating all of their intentions and actions. In this case, we’re discussing polysex or sexual non-exclusivity.
The main feature is that the relationships these people enjoy are usually casual. Polysexuals generally believe that they cannot love more than one person at the same time.
- polyamory
Polyamory differs from polysex because its practitioners seek to maintain multiple real relationships. As a result, those who choose polyamory as their mode of communication believe they are capable of falling in love with more than one person.
Its supporters emphasize the importance of maintaining good communication and expressing emotions to achieve such relationships. As a result, all members of the multiple relationship’s affective needs are met.
- hierarchical polyamory
This type of non-monogamous relationship involves several pillar relationships, where some take more priority than others. These relationships are referred to as the primary, secondary, and tertiary partners.
- non-hierarchical polyamory
Since many believe that hierarchy contradicts polyamory, those who are in non-hierarchal polyamorous relationships insist they can love all their partners equally. This means no one has any advantage over another in the poly dynamic.
- relational anarchy
Finally, some people prefer to enjoy their relationships without labeling them. Relational anarchists believe that rules within a relationship only serve to disrupt the affective bond.
